Matsu, Taiwan
YIGONG, YIMA (Grandparents) is a long-term photographic project initiated in 2015, portraying Matsu's eldest generation through portraiture and oral history. During decades of military administration, cameras were tightly regulated, leaving few traces of ordinary civilian life. Developed through close relationships with the island's elders, the work considers memory, family, and histories absent from official narratives. Together, the portraits form an intimate counter-archive of a generation whose experiences were rarely recorded.
Many islanders wore engraved name rings as a safeguard against separation or dying unidentified.
